Nights with Karsten

Hi. Karsten here. I am into music, playing drums, recording, photography, sports (especially Kansas City Royals baseball and college football - Texas Longhorns, Iowa Hawkeyes, and of COURSE the Kansas Jayhawks!), computers, fishing, biking. I love being outdoors in the summertime. The smell of fresh-cut grass, the crack of the bat, grilling, the warm sun beating down on my neck, ice cold beer, ice cream at dusk, gassing up and hitting the road to nowhere in particular with a friend, a gas station soda, and a camera. Winter? Eh, not so much.

I'm in the process of wrapping up my bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Kansas. About time! Sheesh, it's only taken me 10 years! No, I'm NOT a big slacker, I just took a lot of time off to pursue some really cool opportunities that I will never regret. I also took a small chunk of time to knock out my associate's degree in-between my sessions at KU and Iowa State University.

I know it's not something to be particularly proud of, but I'm pretty much an expert at procrastination! Seriously, it's bad sometimes. But I'm honestly working hard to change. I used to live by the reverse-adage of "why do today what you can put off until tomorrow." Although, as is with most people, I really only put off the stuff I don't wanna do. But nothing ever holds me back from doing the things I enjoy.

Photography is quickly becoming one of my chief hobbies; I use both a pretty nice Canon DSLR camera and a modest Sony point-and-shoot with a Zeiss lens. After taking an introductory photojournalism class at KU, which was albeit rather enjoyable, I decided that I'm not too keen on shooting news events and that my paramount photographic genre is of the "artsy-fartsy" variety. I try to capture the essence of things from a new angle or perspective, focusing on subjects that most people just pass by. Right now I'm in the process of trying to advance my Photoshop skills and getting some of my best pieces up on Flickr, but for the time being most of them live solely on my hard drive and my Facebook page.

I'm also halfway decent at putting pen to paper and creating art with words. Not poems, mind you, but I certainly have my own ways of expressing myself and my thoughts. Some might just call me a windbag.

See you on the radio - 7:00 weeknights!
